The Dalryddian, an average-sized horse of no more than 13.5 hands, is part
of the well-equipped knight's essential string of coursers or "rouncies"
used to lead the mighty fighting horses known as destriers. As the
destrier's natural gait is the trot, the Dalryddian has to cover great
distances matching the warhorse stride for stride. The forceful and
ground-covering trot of the Dalryddian is incredible. Quite often, the
sale of a Dally is dependent on how quickly he can cover a predetermined
distance without laboring.
During the Mountain Campaigns (815-840), the Moab stallions brought back to Kessel by Gallowglasses (Kessel mercenaries) left their definitive stamp on the Dalryddian. This blend of the Moab and the native Dally is evidenced by the excellent horses fielded by the Church and the Northern Nobility.
The Dalryddian has made outstanding contributions to man both in war and peace. He is a well-rounded animal with a natural affinity for people. This perhaps comes from his history which has been closely tied to man. He is easier to keep than many horse breeds, often happiest when living out of doors regardless of the weather. He has a gentle nature yet is hardy, strong and very intelligent. In the field, the Dalryddian is a tremendously competent athlete and is difficult to defeat. Equally at home in Dressage, Hunting, Driving, Skirmish or Cross Country, the Dally does it all with willingness. He has often been referred to as the "best ride and drive animal in the country". The Dalryddian is without a doubt one of the most versatile breeds in Landsrue.
