This is a weak source, but it is the only one we have, so
we are forced to rely upon it.
-- John of Dalrys
In size not too imposing, they are seen as usually 14 hands and very light limbed. They look as fey as their masters, all wire legs, calf eyes and mincy little feet. They are fleet, magic fast steeds and seem to be unnaturally alert. I ain't never seed 'em wearing any tack, saddle or harness at all. They are nearly always ridden by elves, and then mainly Woad Elves around here anyways.
They cannot have any staying power with those small barrels and tiny nostrils, but I have never kept one in sight for long enough to figger. Also, being ridden by Woad Elves means Gato stays shet of them anyway.
Dolwens also do not seem to flourish on grass or hay, I never saw one eat any. Perhaps they eat moonbeams or shadows. They do not like bright sunlight. I saw an elf heal one oncet by using goldenrod oil. The horse had split his leg something fierce. The oil just closed it right up and everything. Its blood was red and smelled right though.
They can move through dense woods very quietly. They may be more related to deer than horses, since my horse never smelt any. I never saw one fight up close, so I dunno how they are in any kind of trouble. Woad Elves never get close on horseback anyways, fightin' wise. They horses allus look a bit nervous and fidgety. I reckon they can see in the dark too. I seen them in white, grey and grey & white, most of em had blue eyes. I seen some moonin' around a small meadow oncet and then they all left together to get with some elves. I didn't hear anyone calling them neither.
Mandabras said he rode one as some kind of challenge and it was like riding a razor back hog. He has been known to exaggerate some.
I never saw one bite anyone.
I think Dolwen comes from an old kingdom word which means rounded and fey, like their heads I guess.
