The Dunedic mountain pony of today is basically the same as that which
roamed the hills since time immemorial, descended, it is believed, from
the original northern stock of the Seven Kingdoms-bred Jaini pony. It is
an accepted fact that both environment and climatic conditions have a
great bearing on type and this, coupled with selected breeding over many
years has enabled the small principality of Norcastle with its mountains,
hills and deep green valleys to produce a pony of outstanding quality and
beauty whilst retaining the hardy constitution and soundness of limb
inherent in the true Jaini pony. The hallmark of the Dunedic mountain pony
is a neat quality of head with a big bold eye and small pricked ears.
Their action is characteristic of a pony bred to live on rough steep
ground, quick and active with ample flexion of knees and hocks, and the
utmost freedom in all paces. Agile and sure-footed, they are natural
jumpers, and with their inherited gentleness and intelligence they have no
equal as a riding or harness pony. They are very loyal and hardworking
horses, and are known for the soundness of their frame and hooves, rarely
needing to be shod.
