This letter was given to Sir Alain by Hubert, Archimandrite Belasius's personal secretary, shortly before Alain left Landsrue Town to accompany Ryde to his holdings in the Dwarflands. Alain had just come from an interview with the Archimandrite when Hubert took him aside and told him that the letter might help him if he found himself in extreme circumstances. It was sealed with the seven-pointed star of Mithras.Hubert went missing after the Battle of Kingsford. Alain eventually opened the letter at the urging of Guilleame of Norcastle, a Churchman in self-imposed exile at Belegost. Guilleame had had suspicions concerning Hubert for some time, and had come to Belegost in fear for his life. His first thought was that Alain had been sent to assassinate him. Alain naturally denied this, but found Guilleame's accusations disturbing enough to convince him to open the letter. Neither Church knight was able to decipher it. Alain showed it to Mariam shortly thereafter, but she couldn't figure it out either.
When the party reached Ancaster Abbey, Alain made a full report to Abbess Beatrice Fons. He entrusted the letter to her, and she returned it to him after she had had it translated by one of the Sagronian sisters. She then suggested that it might not be wise for Alain to travel openly as a Church knight any longer.

A translation and note from Beatrice Fons, the Abbess of Ancaster Abbey.

Alain,
The document you carry is written in an archaic form of Stygian temple script. My linguist assures me that this is a fair translation. Perhaps this will help, although I believe it actually complicates some other things.
