THE CRIME

On October 7, 1997, Francisco Humberto Iglesias and two accomplices were detained in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for attempting to sell a Moche Indian artifact which they allegedly had smuggled into the United States. The accomplices were charged with Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property and smuggling violations. They pled guilty and were sentenced.

Iglesias, Consul General of the Panamanian Consulate in New York City, New York, was later charged. He left the United States on a vacation soon after the initial detainment in Philadelphia.

The artifact that they attempted to sell which has been recovered is called a Moche Indian "backflap." This artifact had been dug from the tombs of the Moche Indians in Sipan, Peru. It is a golden object approximately 24 inches high and weighs approximately 3 pounds. Its age is estimated at 2,000 years and it was worn as a protective device for the warrior's buttocks.
