Victims of "Sloppy Jo":
Ernil Bernal, 36, and Marcial Montessa, 23, are currently awaiting trial in Allenwood, a medium-security federal correctional institution in Pennsylvania. Francisco Iglesias left the country on vacation soon after their arrest. Although he was not expected to return to the United States, the FBI has learned that he was recently in New York City. On November 9, 1998, Iglesias called a former colleage, Susana Rojas, at the Consulate General of Panama, seeking money and assistance. Rojas was surprised to learn that Iglesias was back in New York. When she asked for an explanation, he became agitated and hung up. He later showed up at Rojas' apartment. She refused to let him in. He shouted threats at her through the door, leaving only when she told him she would call the police. Rojas reported the contacts to the FBI the next day, and requested police protection. She was the second victim of the serial killer nicknamed "Sloppy Jo". Like the others, she was found nude, bound hand and foot; her throat had been cut several times.
The FBI thinks it unlikely that Sloppy Jo and Francisco Iglesias are the same person. However, it is continuing to examine all information pertaining to the two cases.
Janet Stone became personally involved in this case after Zurita was killed. Zurita had occasionally provided her with information on the local drug trade, and they had a good working relationship.
