His very first earthly mission amounted to getting coffee for the Angels that were posing for Michelangelo. He's been associated with the art world ever since, particularly the business end of it.
He was kept busy during the rest of the Renaissance just keeping inspiration flowing and helping instigate the vast outpouring of creative effort that characterized the period. It was not uncommon during this period for many of his hosts to 'mistake' him for their Muse, as often all it took was a brief quatro in thier own handwriting, or a quick sketch on the easel in their private studio (no matter how bad) to prod the vision that they were struggling to express, though of course they couldn't quite recall having written/drawn that in the first place, and rarely did it survive the first few edits.
As the world became more sophisticated Appoggee worked somewhat less with the artists themselves, instead relying on timely intervention needed to see that important works actually got published, as patrons, impressarios, and publishers often favored that which would sell over that which the divine will wanted distributed.
Over time his role continued to evolve, and for a long time his primary assignment in artistic endeavors has been focused on dealing with situations where humans have been 'exposed' to the great battle, and are going to publish something that will reveal too much of the Truth.
His job has generally been to distract them by stimulating their creativity with 'more interesting' ideas, and getting things embroidered enough with fictional aspects that they are published as fiction, and only the most discerning of entities, who are already initiated in the conflict, can recognize the reality behind them. These sorts of simple projects always go fairly smoothly, but then they're fairly undemanding for a spirit of Eli's domain.
His reputation for disaster came into existence the first time he was loaned to Yves, even before Eli went missing, but has become especially pronounced since the loan became 'permanent'. Working for Yves he has had a steady stream of assignments that 'went sour'. But no matter how bad things have gone, (even the car wreck that killed his host while Appoggee was driving) thus far Appoggee has been left unblemished by dissonance or discord. This has led to the heavenly rumour that he only gets assigned to missions when the divine plan needs them to fail. Consequently others are reluctant to work with him unless Yves insists, which to the annoyance of the other Archangels he will from time to time. ( "Oh, Michael I hear you're sending some of your fellows down to work on that little project, I've got somebody I want to tag along..." ).
His most recent project was of the innocuous sort. He was using the chief editor/script consultant and some of the stuntmen for a small Toronto-based film company. Through them he saw to it that their weekly depiction of the great battle between good and evil was routinely sidetracked by period costumes, antiques, picturesque location shooting and a lot of fancy swordplay such that the plotline never actually explained any of the big Truths, and never could do more than hint at the things the writer kept trying to put out in plain sight. A superb outcome, since it makes people think about such things, but forces them to depend on faith to draw them to the proper conclusions. Alas, given the infernal forces that control most of mass media, the series failed due to 'bad ratings' and Appoggee is currently without a specific assignment.
