The next morning, they all (including Tomas) head to Rose's Place for breakfast. There they meet Darius and Zara. Appoggee picks up a janitor just getting off work.
Much of breakfast is spent discussing who is who in town, and the best people to contact for information about Rumah. At one point Shilom feels compelled to remind Zara that all this live and let live stuff is very nice, but that there is a war on, you know. Zara smiles politely. Later she suggests that Shilom might like her (Zara) to do something different with her hair.

After breakfast, the group decides to split up in order to get as much information as possible.
Darius drives Reziphel, Zenaniel, and Appoggee/squirrel to campus. They enter Taylor Hall, which is almost empty as it is still quite early.
Darius takes them back to the building's machine room, where they meet Marius, an Elohite of Jean. Darius explains that he and Marius fledged together about hundred years ago; they've only been on Earth for the last 10.
Reziphel, with some help from both Appoggees, says they are trying to find any information they can on Rumah, or Gottlieb, the name Rumah used on the plane ticket. Darius asks Marius if he can take care of this, as he has an "appointment". Marius agrees, and Darius scoots off.
Once he has gone, Marius stiffly relates that Darius is in love with one of the humans on campus, hence his "appointment". He's a little jealous, he says, though of course he wouldn't let it interfere with his work. While he searches the network, Zenaniel leaves to buy new clothing for himself and Reziphel.
Marius is able to find that Gottlieb's ticket was bought after he was chased out of his home base, on February 17th. The ticket itself, of course, was never used. He doesn't find any real estate or rental vehicles in Gottlieb's name, but says that if Gottlieb/Rumah was coming here to visit someone in particular, he may have been planning to stay with them. He also suggests that they speak to Miles, a Mercurian of Yves in the Physics Department; he tries to keep track of Celestial movements in the area.
While waiting for Zenaniel, Marius, Rez, and Appoggee/squirrel chat a bit about the goings on on campus. Marius tells them about the campus Tokamak reactor that he and Darius are trying to get shut down; the recent memo war between departments has not led to anything yet.
Zenaniel returns wearing an orange UT football shirt and mesh shorts. He has another shirt with the UT logo and DAIN BRAMAGE written across the front for Reziphel. Reziphel and Appoggee thank Marius for his time, and as they leave, Marius warns them to stay away from human women, as they are terrible distractions.
As they leave to walk to the Physics Building to see Miles, Appoggee/squirrel rides on Rez's shoulder. The building is more crowded now with students on their way to classes, and several women stop to coo over the squirrel. However, they back away after Zenaniel assures them that it bites.
At the Physics Department, Zenaniel waits in the hall while Reziphel and Appoggee/squirrel ask about Rumah. Miles says that while he keeps track of most of the Celestials in the area, it is very difficult to keeps tabs on transients, especially now when so many people are showing up for the South by Southwest festival. But he promises to let them know if he finds anything. He suggests talking to Hugo, a Servitor of Drugs on loan to Saminga, since Rumah seems most likely to have been involved with Fleurity. He suggests that they not talk to Mackie, who, while also a Servitor of Drugs, is not a very friendly demon.
Meanwhile, Shilom, Gaudior, and Appoggee/Diego drive to Zilker Park. On the way, Gaudior switches vessels to Angela. As it is still quite early, there are only a few people about, mostly joggers and people walking their dogs. After a short time, they spot Moses Austin, gesturing in the air and talking to himself. He's in his late 40's, and dressed in rugged clothing: boots, denims, faded shirt and hat. When they walk up to him, he mistakes them for tourists, and cheerfully spends the next few minutes telling them about Austin and what a beautiful place it is.
Angela eventually gets his attention by celestially humming "Blandine Serves the Will of God". At that point, the conversation turns to more pressing business.
Moses doesn't know about Rumah, but assures them that he doesn't care to have demons in his parks, and doesn't care who knows it. He makes sure the kids are safe whenever he's around. This truce is all nonsense, in his opinion. He also confides to them his big dream: to have Texas break away from the U.S. and become a separate country, with Austin as the capital. Not an easy task, but he feels that it can be done, if he can only convince enough people. Although unconvinced, the angels agree that it is a bold plan.
Shilom, Gaudior, and Appoggee are somewhat comforted to hear from someone who doesn't like the truce in Austin. Moses gives them some information about the city, including Saminga's underground tether and the entrance from Barton Springs, right here in the park.
Afterwards, Shilom picks up the others on campus, and they go back to Rosie's Place for lunch.
After lunch, they head over to the Yellow Rose, where they pay a $20 cover charge (half price for Janet), and ask for Lauren. They order drinks while they wait, including one for her. The club is almost empty, but there is one girl dancing on the far stage. When Lauren appears, they introduce themselves by their vessel names and ask if she can put them in touch with Hugo.
Lauren misunderstands and assumes they are humans who want to talk to Hugo to score drugs. She says it might be possible, and then notices that Zenaniel, who is clutching a bottle of Jack Daniels and a glass, is looking rather tense. She walks up behind him and starts giving him a neck massage, and Zenaniel crushes the glass in his hand. Lauren calls a waitress over to clean up the mess, and starts cleaning the glass out of his hand. While doing so, she asks the other "humans" what's wrong with him. Shilom says that Gil is having some trouble with his oaths, and Lauren backs away from the table rather suddenly.
"Is he safe?" she asks.
The others reply that he knows about the situation in Austin, and is a bit keyed up about it. They also apologize for startling her; they had assumed she knew who they were and why they were asking for Hugo. Zenaniel continues to drink, now from the bottle itself, and says nothing.
Once Lauren gets over the shock of finding a Malakite in her club, she begins to find the situation interesting. She spends a few minutes talking with the angels, and assures them that she will ask Hugo to meet them at the Headliner Club at 8:30 that night. She is about to leave them when Reziphel asks when she dances. She replies that she goes on in the evenings, and then, with a sly smile, offers to dance for them now, since they're new in town and all. Reziphel says that he would like that, and she goes backstage to prepare.
While waiting, Rez goes over to where the other girl is dancing, and watches. He pulls out a $5 and puts it in the woman's garter, and is rewarded with a brilliant smile and her almost-complete attention for a minute or so. He returns to the table when the song ends.
Lauren comes out on the stage nearest to their table, dressed in an outfit that can best be described as a cross between the Old West and a modern boudoir. Her dance is riveting to all in the club; Appoggee/Diego mumbles something about having to bring her back to Heaven, as such artistry simply cannot be wasted. By the end, all of the patrons in the club have gravitated to the stage, and the temperature seems to have gone up 10 degrees. Although Lauren does not ignore any of them, she focusses quite a bit of her attention on Zenaniel, whose inward struggle can be clearly seen on his face. At the end, Shilom hands Zenaniel a $10 bill, and he tremblingly places it in Lauren's garter.
"There, that wasn't so bad, was it?" she purrs.
"No," says Zenaniel in a very small voice.
Lauren smiles and turns away. Zenaniel calls after her, "I hope I never see you again." Lauren simply smiles again and keeps walking.
Zenaniel, who has now drunk the entire bottle of Jack Daniels, has to be carried to the van. They decide to drive him around until he sobers up somewhat. After much drunken singing and a few insulting remarks, he starts to come to his senses. They stop at a gas station, where he cleans the bathroom, wondering to himself what exactly happened.

Reziphel wants to go look for Mark, the cruel human he spotted last night. Zenaniel and Appoggee/squirrel agree to accompany him, and Gaudior, Shilom, and Appoggee/Diego decide to watch an old movie at the local cinema and drafthouse. Shilom insists that Reziphel leave the car with her, but as she approaches the driver's window, Rez speeds off.
Rez and company arrive at Delta Upsilon at about 3:30 pm. Mark Assousa and his roommate, Michael, are in their room. The conversation goes well at first, and they are invited to a big party that the fraternity is having on Saturday night. Then Zenaniel resonates on Mark and finds out that he helped kill a freshman during rush. There is a tense confrontation, but finally the angels leave. A student on the street tells them that the fraternity has been on probation for a few years because of an accidental death during a rush a few years ago. They just started having parties again last semester.
Rez decides he needs to do some research on the freshman's death at the library, and when this is relayed to the others, Shilom decides to try out the campus police station. She finds that Georges Masters, 18, died during a rush party at Delta Upsilon three years ago. Although the police initially thought that his death might have been caused by the actions of three Delta Upsilon members, one of which was Mark (the other two have graduated), they eventually decided that Georges was trying to impress the others and that his death was a self-inflicted accident. Shilom also finds that Mark's father is in the state legislature. There is some suspicion that he may have helped cover up the incident.
While waiting for Reziphel at the library, Zenaniel talks to students until he finds a member of a sorority. Her destiny is to become the first woman president of the United States, and her fate is to be a drunkard. Zenaniel asks her questions about fraternities and sororities in general, and hers in particular.
Shilom, Gaudior, and Appoggee/Diego meet the others at the library, and report what they've learned. Rez is planning his next move, but is not completely sure of what he is going to do, though he gets several suggestions from his fellow angels.
Though it is still early, they decide to head over to the club where they hope to meet Hugo.

Appoggee has a squirrel, and when they get to the club, he picks up a woman named Louise. Zenaniel leaves a message on Druiel's answering machine, saying they need to get in touch with him.
Reziphel, Gaudior (now Angela), Shilom, and Appoggee/squirrel leave in the van for some reason I can't remember. It's about 10 pm, and Reziphel is driving. Appoggee/squirrel is riding on the dashboard. Zenaniel is back at the club with Appoggee/Louise.
Reziphel, driving through an intersection, catches a brief glimpse of motion just before he hits a motorcycle with a driver and a passenger. The motorcycle had no lights, and had gone through a red light. The passenger on the motorcycle, a high school girl named Sara Conner, is instantly killed, causing a surge of disturbance. Appoggee/squirrel is injured after being hurled against the windshield. Zenaniel hears the disturbance, Appoggee/Louise explains what has happened, and Zenaniel picks her up and runs the mile to the accident. The driver, Andrew Harrigan, is injured but not fatally. It is not long before the angels realize that this is Druiel. The police and an ambulance arrive soon afterwards, and Andrew/Dru is taken to the hospital.
At about 11:30, the angels start walking back to the club.
At the club, they meet up with Hugo. They talk to him, explaining that they're here to find out about what Rumah was doing. Hugo denies knowing anything, which is somewhat painful for Dr. Lord. He then says he has some business to attend to, and leaves. Appoggee picks up a pigeon to follow.
Appoggee reports that Hugo has gone to a house in a bad section of town, and has confronted someone that seems to be Mackie. Among other things, he asks Mackie what he's trying to pull. Then he leaves, and Appoggee picks up a pigeon that tails him to The Yellow Rose. Appoggee waits at Mackie's house in a rabbit.
At about 1 am, the other angels get a taxi to Mackie's place. They get out about a block from the house. Four teenage kids are hanging around here, and start heading over towards them. They're all Hispanic, and seem to be looking for trouble. Shilom goes over to them, trying to be friendly, but it becomes obvious that they are taking this the wrong way. She fends them off easily, but doesn't want to hurt them. One draws a knife. There is a flash of light as Zenaniel gets a divine intervention while disarming him; he very precisely breaks his arm. The kids break and run.
Shilom and Zenaniel knock on Mackie's door. Mackie at first mistakes them for new customers sent by Hugo and welcomes them in, but the conversation quickly turns ugly. They tell him that Rumah is dead, which seems to upset him. They also ask him a lot of questions that he doesn't seem particularly inclined to answer. Appoggee takes this opportunity to drop the rabbit for a mouse, and sneak inside. After Zenaniel and Shilom leave, Appoggee/mouse hears Mackie makes a couple of calls to New York City to confirm what they've told him. Later on, stuff happens.
At about 3 am, the group ends up at Tomas's place, where they spend the rest of the night.
